The Competition


Three levels of the competition include: School Championship, National Prelims and National Finals. Only the qualifiers from each level progress to the next level of the competition.

The rounds of the School Championship

The School level competition comprises 5 written rounds.

HOMOPHONES -Homophones are words that have different spelling, but the same pronunciation. In this round, meanings of two words that form ahomophone are given. The students have to find the words making sure the words are pronounced the same.

E.g.

a. took food into mouth, chewed and swallowed it - ATE

b. a number                                                                        - EIGHT

SYNONYMS - Here, numerous sentences are given with one word in each in italics. The task is to find the synonym of this word and replace it in order to suit the context.

E.g. She was not ______________________ [allowed] leave on that day.

Ans: granted

PROVERBS - A proverb is a brief, memorable saying that expresses a truth or belief. Here, each proverb will have a word left out. Find the missing word and complete the proverb.

E.g. Better late ______________________ never.

Ans: than

PUNCTUATION - The participants will have to punctuate the given paragraph correctly.

LETTER DROP - In this round, certain words will be given from which a letter maybe missing in some, while the rest of the words may be correct. Identify the missing letters and write down the correct spelling of the words.

Rounds of the National Prelims & the National Finals (Only orals and are same for both levels)

The five oral rounds are:

WORD BUILD - Every participant has to build a new word with the last letter of the word told by the previous participant and also spell it. The participant will exit the round once they provide a wrong word or spell the word wrong.

STEM WORDS - Complete the word to complement the clue given.
E.g. CAR

Goods carried by a ship CARGO
A vegetable CARROT
A thick material used for covering floors CARPET

PIRATE SCRABBLE - Form two words with the same letters using the clues given.
E.g. A dirty mark - STAIN
A holy person - SAINT

WORD MATRIX - Spell as many words as possible using the letters in the squares on four sides and also the letters in the middle in the same order.

VISUAL QUIZ - Choose the correct word for the object / part marked in the picture, from the options given.
